1. 5273 BARHAM CANTERBURY ROAD (north-west side) The Steward's House, Broome Park Hotel (formerly listed as The 8teward's House, Broome Park) TR 24 NW 18/22C 30.1.67 II GV 2. Built by Sir Henry Oxenden about 1778 and probably designed by Jams Gandon. An attractive little early Gothick house of 2 storeys faced with mapped flints with hipped slate roof and castellated parapet. Three windows facing north, 4 windows facing south and 2 windows facing east and west. Each front flanked by rusticated quoins, the rustication being formed of large flints placed outwards, unknapped. The central window bay of the north front and the 2 central window bays of the south front project slightly and are similarly fanned by quoins. Each window bay of the east and west fronts is so flanked, the southernmost one of each projecting slightly and with a gable over containing a quatrefoil window. Pointed casement windows of 2 lights, those on the first floor of the south front being larger than the others. Most of the casements have leaded glazing bars. Obtusely pointed doorway with fanlight to both north and south fronts without glazing bars. Said to have been the residence of Lord Kitchener while the alterations to Broome Park were in progress.
