Description
CANTERBURY WOOLAGE GREEN
TR 24 NW
18/726 Little Thatch
- II
Detached house. C16 and C18. Timber framing and brick and flint, with plaster and weatherboarding, roofs of thatch and clay tiles. West front: brick plinth, ground floor plastered, weatherboarding above; C19 windows to ground and first floor in central two-storey section; entrance in brick lean-to to south; isolated archway in brick and random rubble runs westwards from northern extension, probably C19 but incorporating earlier partly legible inscription 'RD --4(?)8'. Half-hipped roof of thatch. East front: ground floor has C18 brickwork with C20 insertions. Weatherboarding to first floor; axial chimney stack of C18 brickwork with offsets; scattered fenstration; single bay extension at north end under catslide roof forms part of northern single storey extension of c.1970. The interior reveals the remaining C16 timber-framed north wall with main posts, tension braces. Mid-rail and (presumably) original entrance. The present living room which occupies the ground floor of the original building, is open apart from enclosed staircase; it is timber-framed in C18 pine and has an open hearth with bressummer, also C18. The original C16 jowled main post, tie beam and wall plate can be seen in an upstairs bedroom at the north-east corner of the building.
