Description
TQ 64 SW PEMBURY TONBRIDGE ROAD
5/428 Yew Tree Farmhouse 20.10.86 II
Former farmhouse. Probably early C18, modernised in the C19 (one of the outshots is dated 1816). Timber-framed. Ground floor level is underbuilt with Flemish bond red brick with decorative burnt headers. A brick in the end outshot is inscribed with the initials WB and the date 1816 and the brickwork runs continuously from the outshot to the front wall. Framing above is clad with peg-tile. Brick stacks and chimneyshafts; peg-tile roof.
Plan: Farmhouse faces south south west, say south. It has a 2-roomplan with central crosspassage to stair in rear stair block. Both rooms have gable-end stacks. The projecting stack on the left (west) end may be a C19 addition to a previously unheated service room. Room to right is the main living room.
2 storeys with attics in the roofspace. Full height stair block to rear and secondary block alongside, both rising from probably secondary lean-to outshots which return round the right end.
Exterior: Not quite symmetrical 3-window front of C19 casements with glazing bars. Nearly central front doorway contains a C19 part-glazed fielded 6-panel door. Main roof is gable-ended.
Interior: Was not available for inspection at the time of this survey although the house appears to have had very little C20 modernisation. The previous list description mentions an axial beam in the main living room with narrow chamfers, a large brick fireplace with breadoven in the same room, an C18 winder stair and other C18 plank doors.
