TQ 53 NE SPELDHURST LANGTON ROAD (south side), LANGTON GREEN 8/527 Rusthall II Large house. Probably C17 origins, massively rebuilt circa 1820, various C19 and C20 modernisations, most recently circa 1970 with extensions. Painted brick with stone ashlar dressings; brick stacks and painted brick chimneyshafts; peg-tile roof. Plan: Large house. The main block faces west and has an irregular double depth plan, front and back room either side of the entrance hall containing the main stair. Large left (north) room has a rear stack backing onto the rear room which has an axial stack backing onto a C20 extension at the left end. Disused axial stack between front and back right rooms. These are the principal rooms of the 1820 house. Service rooms to rear have been rebuilt and enlarged. 2 storeys. Exterior: Attractive nearly symmetrical 3-bay Gothick front. Outer bays break forward at ground floor level with octagonal corner piers rising above the parapet with stone caps and finials. Stone cornice below embattled parapet. Chamfered plinth. Right bay contains one window and left bay contains 2 windows, all with Tudor style hoodmoulds with the label stops carved as shields. Single right window is a mullion-and-transom window without glazing bars whilst 2 windows of the left bay are tripartite sashes with central 12-pane sashes with top tier of Tudor arch glazing bars with coloured glass in the spandrels. First floor windows of end bays are round headed with hoodmoulds and 3-light windows have a lattice pattern of glazing bars. Large gables over have ornamental open cusped bargeboards with prominent apex finials and pendants and similar bottom pendants. Central 2- storey gabled porch with similar bargeboards. Arch-headed plank door with Gothick pattern of studded cover strips and fanlight has patterned glazing bars. Stringcourse at first floor level and shield-shaped plaque above. First floor window has a Tudor arch head and contains a 2-light window with margin panes. Porch flanked by small arch-headed lancets. Right south end has double gable end with similar bargeboards and projecting ground floor bay in the same style as those on the front but here all the windows are circa 1970 aluminium-framed windows and ground floor ones enlarged to French windows. Similar C20 windows around the rest of the house except for a couple of originals, e.g. rear north room of front block has a large Tudor style oak ovolo-moulded mullion-and-transom window and a flat faced mullion window, both containing diamond panes of leaded glass and with good ferramenta. Interior: A mixture of styles. Entrance hall has a conventional Georgian geometric stair with stick balusters and mahogany handrail. Northern (right of front) rooms have C17 style with chamfered and scroll stopped beams and Tudor arch stone fireplaces. They also include some reset genuine Jacobean panelling. Roof not inspected.
