Description
TQ 53 37 SPELDHURST BIRD-IN-HAND STREET, OLD GROOMBRIDGE 16/447 The Lodge
GV II
Former lodge to Burrswood House. Circa 1838, heavily modernised in 1979 with large extensions. Coursed sandstone ashlar with some exposed timber framing; sandstone stack and chimneyshaft; peg-tile roof.
Plan: Now an L-plan house with its doorway into the new section and facing north. The old lodge is now the 2-room plan east wing and originally faced east towards Old Groombridge. Axial stack between the 2 rooms.
Single storey with attic rooms in the roofspace.
Exterior: Restrained Tudor style. 2-bay east front. All the windows are C20 casements without glazing bars. To left is a full height bay projecting a little from the main front and with the timber framed first floor section jettied even further forward and resting on exposed joists. The actual ground floor window is also broken forward from the centre of the bay. Window to right is blocking the original doorway. Gabled doorway above. Roof is gable- ended and the stone ashlar chimneyshaft is tall and Tudor style. Bay window in right gable end is made of reconstituted stone and dated 1979.
Interior: Not inspected.
Set back some distance up the drive to Burrswood House (q.v.) this C19 lodge has group value with the well-preserved village.
