HORSMONDEN MARLE PLACE ROAD TQ 63 NE (south side) 3/91 Oasthouse about 30 metres north east of Hale Farmhouse GV II
Oasthouse, incorporating former domestic building. C16 or earlier, altered and extended C18 and early C19. Timber framed stowage clad with red brick on ground floor and weather boarding on first floor. Red brick roundels. Plain tiled roofs. Two storey stowage with roof hipped to right and gabled to left and with 3 skylights. Six shuttered window openings on first floor and wooden casement to right and 2 French doors on ground floor. Left return with boarded attic loft door with hoist and pulley over, boarded first floor loft door and 2 carriage openings on ground floor. Four roundels to rear with cowls intact. Interior: fine clasped purlin roof with diminished principals and wind braces, of 6 bays, that to centre right of double width. The wall to the roundels contains a jetty to first floor supported on inserted posts and on moulded bracket which appears domestic in origin. Preliminary work for conversion reportedly uncovered traces of probable domestic building below the right hand roundels. Being prepared for conversion to domestic use at time of survey.
