HAWKHURST HASTINGS ROAD TQ 7429-7529 (east side) 18/317 Herscliel's Dairy (formerly listed as 20.6.67 Collingwood Farmhouse) GV II House. C18. Red brick, the upper floor a C20 addition in poorer quality brick. Classical-Gothick mixture in style. Single storey to main elevation, 2 storeys to return. Plinth and parapet, with stacks to left and to right. Projecting centre piece with pilasters and open brick pediment, containing large semi-circular arched recess, with traceried lunette over boarded door and 2 Y-traceried glazing bar sashes, all in pointed arched surrounds. Smaller arched recesses to left and to right with similar sashes, with 2 arches and similar sashes to left return, right return with added porch and glazing bar sash. The upper sections of walling create an unfortunate box-like appearance with inappropriate casements on return elevation first floors. The building no doubt pre-dates Sir John Herscliel's purchase of nearby Collingwood House in 1840, after whom the building is named. Listing NGR: TQ7570429096
