Description
TQ 67 41 BRENCHLEY FAIRMANS LANE
15/72 Gatehouse Farmhouse 20.10.54 GV II
Former farmhouse. Late C17 or earlier origins, remodelled or extended in the C18 and again in the C19. C20 alterations. Partly framed construction, the ground floor underbuilt in brick, the first floor tile-hung. The later parts probably originally brick on the ground floor, the first floor tile-hung; peg- tile roof, stacks with brick shafts.
Plan: East facing. The present arrangement is a double depth plan, 2 rooms wide with a central entrance facing a cross passage containing the stair. The rear right (north west) wing appears to be late C17 in origin, the front block, heated from end stacks, C18 but perhaps a rebuilding. The rear left block is C19 and has infilled the L-plan house to give a fully double depth plan.
Exterior: 2 storeys and attic with a cellar to the rear left (south west). Symmetrical 3-bay front of Flemish bond brick on a plinth with a moulded brick cornice at first floor level below the tile-hanging; gable-ended roof and end stacks. Steps up to a half-glazed circa early C19 panelled front door with fielded panels and a flat porch hood with a cornice carried on shaped brackets. 3 first floor 2-light late C19 or early C20 casements with polygonal leaded panes; 2 similar 3-light ground floor casements. The rear right wing is half-hipped at the rear (west) end and the north elevation has C20 windows including a French window and 2 flat-roofed attic dormers.
Interior: Exposed carpentry in the rear right wing and north room fo the main block is of a plain character and includes a lot of re-used timber. The front right room has a large open fireplace with a plain lintel. The rear wing preserves wall-framing on the first floor with jowled wall posts. Circa late C18 stick baluster stair with a wreathed handrail.
Roof: The roof of the main block is of common rafter couples without purlins or a ridgeboard. Similar common rafter roof to rear right wing.
Group value with Gatehouse Cottages.
