Description
TQ 64 SE BRENCHLEY FURNACE LANE (off)
6/81 Hononton Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. Circa late C16/early C17 with a slightly earlier wing. Framed construction on sandstone rubble footings, the front elevation tile-hung and partly underbuilt in brick; peg-tile roof; brick stacks.
Plan: The main block faces west and has a 3 room lobby entrance plan, the 2 northern rooms heated by back-to-back fireplaces in an axial stack. Rear left (north east) kitchen wing at right angles is one room on plan, heated by an end stack, with an outshut across the east end. This wing is separately framed and may be slightly later than the main block.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front with a C20 gabled porch to left of centre with a C20 panelled door. To the left of the porch the front elevation has been underbuilt in brick to first floor level. C20 3-light iron framed casements with leaded panes, similar one-light window above the porch. The roof of the main block is hipped at the left end, where it adjoins the wing, and gabled at the right end. Axial stack with staggered triple shafts, projecting right end (south) stack. The left (north) return has C20 casements and a C20 door into the kitchen wing. The rear (east) elevation preserves its wall-framing to the footings on the exterior with large curved tension braces above the middle rail on both the main block and inner return of the wing. The ground drops away to the south and there are steps up to a C19 plank door at the left (south) end of the main block. 2 first floor 2-light casements, one to ground floor right, matching those on the front elevation, one of the first floor windows with a quadrant catch. The inner return of the wing also preserves its wall-framing with similar timbers of slightly larger scantling including a narrow smoke bay at the right (east) end. The wing has a probably C19 plank and cover strip door to the left below a tiled pentice that extends across the front elevation and a late C20 casement to the right of the porch. 2 first floor C20 casements. A large semi-circular projecting bread oven survives at the right (east) end.
Interior: Exposed carpentry includes axial ceiling beams in the main block with step stops and exposed joists. The fireplace in the centre room is open with brick jambs and an original lintel. An iron spit contraption, probably C19, is fixed to the fireplace lintel. Another iron mechanism, of unknown function, is fixed to the axial beam. It is designed to revolve a weight fixed to it by means of a hook. The rear wing also preserves exposed carpentry and a massive fireplace replacing a smoke bay.
Roof: Not inspected but the original timbers, including those to the smoke bay, are said to survive.
