TQ 67 41 BRENCHLEY HIGH STREET, BRENCHLEY (south side) 15/129 2 Wimshurst memorials immediately east of the north transept of the Church of All Saints GV II
A headstone with 2 bodystones and a double headstone, the latter enclosed by iron railings. Single headstone early C19, double headstone 1870s. Freestone with cast iron railings. The headstone to the south is segmental-headed with scrolled shoulders. The head is carved with the eye of God with descending rays. Festoons carved to left and right. Inscription cut in an open book, carved in relief; swag of cloth below. Commemorates Adam Wimshurst, died 1835 and his wife. 2 body stones to the east. The double headstone to the north is Gothic Revival with 2 pointed arches to the head, each with a cusped border. Engaged shafts with stiff-leaf C13 style capitals flank the inscriptions, which commemorate Thomas Wimshurst, died 1875 and Frederick Wimshurst, died 1871. Plain stone slab in front, to the east. Gothic style low cast iron railings in panels with cinquefoil heads, the main verticals gabled on all 4 sides and decorated with crockets.
A good pair of memorials in an outstanding churchyard.
