TQ 64 SE BRENCHLEY PALMERS GREEN LANE 6/184 Hononton Cottage GV II House. Circa early C17, perhaps a remodelling of an earlier building. Late C20 alterations. Framed construction, the ground floor infilled with stretcher bond brick but retaining the wall posts; first floor tile-hung; peg- tile roof; brick stacks. Plan: The house faces west. 5 bays. 3 room lobby entrance plan, the 2 left hand (northern) rooms heated by back-to-back fireplaces in an axial stack: hall in the centre, parlour or kitchen to the left (north). The left hand fireplace may be secondary as the narrow bay appears to be associated only with the hall stack and the relationship between the left hand fireplace and the ceiling carpentry of the room is awkward. Unheated service room to the right (south) formerly divided into 2, probably buttery and pantry. The position of the original stair is unclear. It may have risen from the front of the 2 service rooms. Later rear outshut. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front. Roof half-hipped at ends. Axial stack with rebuilt shaft to left of centre, C20 stack at right end. All the windows and front door are late C20 with plastic frames and diamond leaded panes. Front door slightly to left of the original entrance but still facing the axial chimneybreast. 3 first and 2 ground floor 2-light casements. Interior: The hall, in the centre, has a chamfered beam on the long axis with step stops and chamfered joists. The fireplace has been rebuilt. The original doorway to the service end has been blocked but retains a chamfered lintel. Evidence of former mullioned window with diagonally-set mullions on the rear wall, converted to a doorway to the outshut. The left hand room has exposed joists and an open fireplace with rebuilt jambs and an original lintel. A cross beam immediately in front of the fireplace retains sockets for a former partition. It may be a re-used timber, alternatively the stack may be inserted in a former passage. The service end has exposed joists and evidence of a former partition dividing it into 2. The wall posts have flared jowls. 2 blocked mullioned windows on the rear elevation of the first floor, one retaining original mullions. Roof: Staggered butt purlin roof, probably a late C17 replacement. A traditional house of the region retaining most of its frame. Listing NGR: TQ6879241720
