Description

TQ 64 SE BRENCHLEY SPOUT LANE 6/186 Flightshott (formerly listed as Flightshott Cottage) 2.2.79 II House. Mid/late C17 or earlier origins, thoroughly renovated and largely rebuilt since 1976, alterations still in progress at time of survey (1989). Framed construction, underbuilt in Flemish bond brick, first floor tile-hung; peg-tile roof; stack with brick shafts. Plan: North east facing. Overall L-plan, the main block 2 rooms wide with a large heated room to the left and an unheated room to the right containing the stair, rear right outshut. Lower-roofed rear left service wing at right angles may be earlier in origin. The internal plan has been modified during the present programme of alterations. Present entrance into the rear right outshut. Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. Tall, symmetrical 2-window north east front with regularly spaced C20 3-light ovolo-moulded windows, the ground floor window right with a narrow timber lintel with shallow C17 carving. The eaves of the half-hipped roof are supported on 3 shaped brackets, the outer brackets elaborately-carved. On the left return the attic storey is jettied. C20 front door on right return. The axial stack of the rear wing has 4 impressively tall staggered shafts. Interior: Somewhat fragmentary remains of high quality C17 work. The principal heated room on the ground floor has a moulded crossbeam supported on short moulded brackets and a large open fireplace. The 2 first floor rooms in the main block have 3-light ovolo-moulded windows, set high up and blocked externally. A chamfered bar-stopped frame on the front wall of the left hand first floor room surrounds the existing C20 window. The first floor has been re-partitioned but the original chamber fireplace survives in situ with stone jambs and a cranked chamfered lintel. Roof: No access to roofspace at time of survey (1989).
