Description

TQ 64 SE BRENCHLEY WINDMILL HILL, BRENCHLEY (west side) 6/195 Mill Cottage II House, formerly associated with a windmill, which no longer exists. 2 cottages at one time. Probably early C18, although there is said to be documentary evidence of a building on the site in 1566 (information from owner). Framed construction, underbuilt in brick of 2 different dates on the ground floor; tile-hung above, the end walls weatherboarded. Peg-tile roof; stack with brick shaft. Plan: South facing, built end on to the road and into the slope of the land at the west end where there is direct access to the first floor. The windmill stood to the west. 3 rooms on plan with a rear (north) outshut. The 2 left hand rooms are larger and heated from back-to-back fireplaces in an axial stack; smaller unheated room at the right (east) end. A straight joint on the front elevation, dividing English from Flemish bond brickwork suggests underbuilding at different dates or 2 phases to the main range. A 1940s photograph shows 2 front doors, the left hand door no longer exists, the right hand door leads directly into the right hand (east) heated room, from which the stair rises on the rear wall. The rear outshut is heated with a rear left (north west) lateral stack. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window south front. C20 front door to right of centre. Various C20 2 and 3-light timber casements. Roof half- hipped at ends. The right (east) return, facing the road has 2 ground floor C20 windows, one to the outshut and one first floor 2-light C20 casement. Interior: The right hand heated room has a plain axial beam and a chamfered lintel to the fireplace. The left hand room has slightly chamfered intersecting ceiling beams, the fireplace with a C20 lintel. Wall-framing of slender scantling with straight cut jowls to the wall posts. Common rafter roof construction with an added ridge board. At the north west the outshut roof is carried on a tie with raking queen struts. Listing NGR: TQ6793242170
