Description

TQ 64 NW CAPEL TUDELEY LANE 1/305 The Round House GV II Converted oasthouse, now one house but formerly 2 cottages. Mid/late C19, converted in the early/mid C20. Red brick, the front is timber-framed and hung with peg-tile; C20 brick stacks and chimneyshafts; peg-tile roof. Plan: Originally an oasthouse facing south. Stowage now has a projecting right (east) end stack and left front corner stack. Single circular plan former hop kiln on left (west) end. Stowage is 2 storeys. Exterior: Former stowage has an irregulr 1:2-window front of C20 casements with glazing bars. Front doorway is right of centre and contains a C20 plank door under a shallow flat hood. (The National Monuments Records photograph of 1956 shows a pair of similar doors). Stowage roof is hipped to right. The hop kiln has a brick corbelled cornice and tall conical roof without its cowl. Interior: Not inspected. This is an early example of a converted oast in an attractive landscape where a high proportion of the buildings are listed including the nearby Gate Cottage and Gate Houe (q.v.) and the barn to south (q.v.).
