Description

TQ 64 SE PADDOCK WOOD MASCALLS COURT ROAD 6/337 The Cottages, Mascalls Court II Former farmhouse, divided into 2 tenanted cottages. Probably mid C17. Framed construction, the front elevation ground floor nogged with brick, the first floor tile-hung with bands of scalloped tiles; peg-tile roof; stack with brick shaft. Plan: The house faces approximately south, slightly set back from the road. The main block is a 2-cell lobby entrance plan house with 2 heated rooms of about the same size heated from back-to-back fireplaces in the axial stack. A stair rises from the left hand room off the rear wall. The rear wing, containing service rooms is probably secondary. Exterior: 2 storeys. Almost symmetrical 3-bay front with an unusually steep hipped roof, the axial stack with staggered triple shafts. C18 front door in the centre with fielded panels and an early C19 gabled porch with lattice sides and pierced bargeboards. 2 ground floor windows, the left hand a C19 or C20 3-light casement, 2-panes per light, the right hand a 3-light casement, reglazed in the late C20. 2 first floor outer 2-light small-pane casements, probably C19, with a small one-light window in the centre. The left return has one first floor 2-light C19 small-pane casement to the left and 2 ground floor 2-light windows. Attractive tiled pentice along the left return. Small framing exposed on the left return. The rear service wing roof is half- hipped. Interior: West Cottage inspected. This preserves scroll-stopped ceiling beams on the long axis; jowled wall posts to the wall-framing. C19 chimney- pieces to the ground and first floor rooms, one with a tiled surround, the other with a cast iron grate. The interior of the east cottage is also likely to be of interest. Roof: The main range was only partly accessible at time of survey (1989) but appears to be a clasped purlin type. A very attractive building on a roadside site; group value with the listed farmbuilding to the east (q.v.). Listing NGR: TQ6788843861
