Description

TQ 53 NW SPELDHURST THE GREEN (east side), LANGTON GREEN 7/482 Nos 1 and 2 GV II Pair of small cottages. Early C19. Red-brown-coloured brick randomly bonded, tending towards Flemish bond; brick stack and chimneyshaft; slate roof. Plan: Pair of contemporary cottages facing west north west, say west, onto The Green. Each is mirror-plan of the other. Each is one-room wide, 2-rooms deep with central staircase. Axial stack between serves back-to-back fireplaces. No 1 is the right (south) cottage. No 2 to left. 2 storeys. Secondary flat-roofed 2-storey service extensions to rear. Exterior: Symmetrical front fenestration with 4 first floor windows with low segmental brick arches over, all C19 iron-framed casements with glazing bars. Ground floor level breaks forward a little (this is original) and each cottage has a single large window. No 2 has a plain casement with glazing bar and No 1 also has a casement with glazing bars but this one has a top arcade of Gothick glazing bars. Roof is gable-ended both ends. Both cottages have central doorways in the end walls giving direct entry into the front rooms. Both contain original plank doors with coverstrips and No 1 has a plain timber hood on shaped brackets. Interiors: No exposed carpentry. Plain joinery. Roof not inspected. According to the occupant of No 1 these cottages were built as gardener's cottages for Holmewood House (q.v.). They also form part of an attractive and varied group of listed buildings fronting onto The Green. Listing NGR: TQ5433639197
