Description

TQ 55 41 SPELDHURST SPELDHURST HILL (north side), SPELDHURST 12/563 Pair of Coyte headstones adjacent east wall of the chancel of the Church of St Mary the Virgin GV II Pair of adjacent headstones. Dated 1733 and 1735 in memory of William and Ann Coyte. Both are similar upright sandstone slabs standing approx 650mm high. Both have shaped heads which are carved above inscriptions in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. The left one, in memory of Ann Coyte (died 1735), has a head carved with a crowned skull with wings. The right one, in memory of William Coyte (died 1733) has its head carved with an anchor in a roundel flanked by scrolls. Listing NGR: TQ5537041442
