Description

TQ 55 41 SPELDHURST SPELDHURST HILL (north side), SPELDHURST 12/569 Row of Jarret headstones approx 3m north east of the chancel of the Church of St Mary the Virgin GV II Row of 5 headstones. All are C18 in memory of various members of the Jarret family. All are upright sandstone slabs standing from 150-600mm high with shaped heads. There is a row of 4 adjacent stones, all with crossed arrows inscribed on their heads and another some 2-3m to the north which has a double curvilinear head and recessed double front with moulded frame. The heads of this one are inscribed with hourglasses amongst scrolls. All are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. The double-headed one commemorates the death of John Jarret in 1763. Not all the others are easily legible but the earliest records the death of Richard Jarret in 1725. Listing NGR: TQ5537041451
