Description
TQ 55 41 SPELDHURST SPELDHURST HILL (south side), SPELDHURST 12/587 Walls, gate-piers and gates at the entrancce to The Manor
GV II
Walls, gate-piers, pair of timber gates. Probably 1880s, contemporary with alterations to the Manor (q.v.) for Charles W. Powell. Sandstone ashlar walls and piers; timber and iron gates, the original oak replaced with a softwood copy in 1989 but re-using the old ironwork. The retaining walls curve inwards to the gateway and curve up to the gate-piers with a chamfered moulding below the coping. Gate-piers square on plan with a deep chamfered plinth and chamfered cornice. Pair of striking, substantial openwork timber gates, each with asymmetrical diagonal braces, the moulded cusped timbers forming a lattice pattern with iron cross-pieces in each panel and tall, moulded cusped styles. Inside the entrance, on the south side, a well-house in the same ownership as the Cottage (q.v.) (the neighbouring house to the south) is ashlar masonry with a doorway with a high quality C17 panelled door with richly-moulded panels.
