BENENDEN TQ73SE BABBS LANE 1350-0/2/1 Babbs Farmhouse 20/06/67 GV II*
House. c1603 house with integral parlour wing refaced in C18 and refenestrated in C20. Timber framed building with close-studding with plaster infill visible in the west face of the west wing but remainder refaced in red brick on ground floor and tile hung above. Tiled roof with large external brick chimney stack and large crow-stepped brick external stack to rear. 2 storeys 4 windows facing west, 3 windows facing south. C20 casements. C20 dormers with 6 panelled door. Interior has fine Jacobean staircase with solid treads and newel posts with finials. Hall has screen with linenfold panelling, roll moulded ceiling and open fireplace with wooden roll moulded bressumer with spandrels. Parlour ceiling is also roll moulded with stone 4 centred arched fireplace with overmantel with volutes. Series of fine panelled doors. In the early C18 this was the house of the infamous Kitty Fisher a lady at court about whom the nursery rhyme about Lucy Locket and Kitty Fisher was devised.
