Description

1. WEST STREET 5277 No. 45 (Hazards House and former Brewery TQ 6474 SE and offices) TQ 67 SW 1 and 8/229 II G.V. 2. Original part a house with public house added to front. House C18 altered and extended after 1865. 2 parallel ranges. Front range of stock brick in Flemish bond, the front stuccoed and slate roof. 2 storeys, 5 windows, moulded parapet, 5 cambered sashes with horns moulded bond between floors, 6 pilasters on ground floor. Built out bar front is of 1 storey stuccoed. Moulded cornice. Right hand projecting pediment and pilasters. 2 sashes without glazing bars and 2 panelled door with fanlight above. The C18 rear range is also of 2 storeys but of higher elevation. Red brick to front roof now covered in modern pantiles. Stone coping and moulded stone cornice to front elevation which is otherwise masked by other range. Rear elevation of 3 storeys with dentil brick eaves cornice, 3 C19 sashes with cambered heads and vertical glazing bars only to upper floors and 2 C19 canted bays to ground floor. Central possibly C18 doorcase with wooden hood on brackets. Side elevation has 2 12-pane early C19 type sashes and plinth. Interior has to rear range C19 straight baluster staircase with dado rail, 4 panelled dais to ground and 1st floor and 2nd floor, 2 panelled doors, one first floor room had its walls covered in hessian at time of survey so it was impossible to establish whether or not there was C18 panelling underneath. C19 range has roof with exposed roof trusses and a C19 chimney breast with elaborate plaster decoration with 3 masted schooners. Included for remains of C18 Hazards House and for group value with No. 44 West Street. Listing NGR: TQ6450274429
