Description
HAWKHURST RYE ROAD TQ 7630-7730 (north side)
17/405 Fowlers Park House 20.6.67 GV II House, now flats. Built c.1813/1814 and altered 1869, R Norman Shaw architect; part demolished mid C20. Rendered early C19 fronts, red brick and painted brick alterations with slate roof. Entrance front: 2 bays of 1869 elevation remain, with plinth, moulded plat band and pilasters to moulded cornice and dentil eaves, with 2 glazing bar sashes on first floor, and 4 large glazing bar sashes, paired, on ground floor. Entry by glazed door in arcaded entrance porch on right return, with 18-light mullioned and transomed stair window over. This return elevation extremely irregular with glazing bar sashes, was originally an internal court- yard. The front as built by Norman Shaw (from photographic evidence) was 5 bays wide, with attic with pedimented dormers. The platform for the demolished 3 bays which fronted the present entrance courtyard survives. Garden elevations: early C19, 2 storeys with plinth and plat band and cornice-parapet, with projecting centre piece with segmental headed recess, with 5 glazing bar sashes on first floor, 4 large French windows on ground floor and central glazed door with traceried segmental fanlight and sidelights, the right return with glazing bar sashes. An engraving print of 1813 shows verandahs with tented door surrounds along whole of ground floor, the outline can be seen in the rendering. Interior: although converted to flats, the 1869 stair survives, with large turned balusters to open-well stair with balustraded landing, and C17 style wainscotting and moulded cornice to roof. Other rooms with surviving C17 style wooden pilastered fire places. Fowlers Park was the head of a considerable estate in east Hawkhurst, the C17 house replaced 1813/1814 the home of Richard Kilburn, d.1678, eminent lawyer and author of 'Survey of County of Kent', 1659.
