Description

TQ 53 NW SPELDHURST STATION ROAD, ASHURST 7/590 Footbridge at Ashurst Station II Footbridge over the railway. Station was opened in 1888. Cast iron footbridge over the railway linking the up- and down-line platforms. From each platform straight flights of steps with wooden treads up to a half landing supported on 4 columns with moulded caps and bases and with open spandrel-like braces springing from small fluted brackets enriched with leaves. Stairs have octagonal newel posts with moulded caps and bases with plain handrail over trelliswork. Main bridge rises with a few steps each side to the walkway. The curving girders make the bridge rise in a flat-topped arch with curving corners. The footway is braced by a series of L-profile iron strips and each side of the parapet the braces curve out and back in again - onion-shaped. Listing NGR: TQ5083238627
