Description

TQ 62 40 PEMBURY THE GREEN, PEMBURY 13/357 No 5, Gates House including front area railings GV II Large house. Mid C19, some C20 modernisation. Stucco probably over brick; brick stacks with plastered chimneyshafts with acroteria-like crests on top; slate roof. Plan: Double depth plan house facing south east with front and back rooms either side of central entrance hall and staircase. The left front room is heated by an axial stack backing onto the entrance hall and the room behind has another axial stack. The right front and back rooms have a stack between serving back-to-back fireplaces. Principal rooms at the front and service rooms to rear. 2 storeys with basement. Exterior: Symmetrical 3:1:3-window front of C19 horned 4-pane sashes, all with stucco architraves. The outer 3-window sections are in full height canted bays. Continuous sills on both floors supported on fluted brackets and first floor band has a dentil frieze. The ground floor windows have shouldered architraves. Centre first floor window in recessed panel. Basement has windows in the bays, also in recessed panels. The drop for the basement windows is fenced by plain iron railings. Central front doorway contains a C19 part-glazed 4-panel door and overlight behind a porch up 5 stone steps; Ionic columns and moulded entablature including a dentil frieze. Low pitch parallel roofs are hipped both ends. Interior: Not inspected but original joinery and other detail is suspected. The front courtyard is fenced by original spear-headed iron railings set into stone coping. Gates House is the centre one of 3 good C19 detached houses on the north west side of The Green.
