Description
TQ 64 SE BRENCHLEY THE CROOK
6/60 Oasthouse about 45m north east of Wat Tyler's Cottage
GV II
Oasthouse undergoing conversion at time of survey (1988). Probably 1860s or 1870s. Brick kilns with peg-tile roofs and timber cowls, the stowage rebuilt in garden wall band brick on the ground floor, the first floor weatherboarded; no roof covering to the stowage at time of survey (1989), peg-tile roof planned.
Plan: A roadside building, facing south and sited immediately east of a converted barn (q.v.). Stowage with 2 kilns at the east end and a third on the north side.
Exterior: 2 storey stowage with an asymmetrical 3-window front. The ground floor has 3 2-light windows with glazing bars to the left of the front door and is blind to the right. The first floor has loft door over the front door, 2 2-light casements with glazing bars to the left, one similar window to the right, a former ventilating panel marked by a rectangle of fixed slats. Cylindrical kilns with brick cogging below the conical roofs and original timber cowls. No windows in the kilns at time of survey.
Interior: Much of the original structural carpentry is intact.
Roof: The original roofs survive. The stowage roof is of king post and strut design, the kiln roofs are single tier with very long rafters which have been augmented by steel ring bands.
The oast is sited on a ridge which drops away towards Paddock Wood to the north, making the kilns particularly prominent. Group value with the adjacent converted barn and Wat Tyler's Cottage.
