Description

TQ 67 41 BRENCHLEY HATMILL LANE 15/87 Brookside Cottage II House. Probably late C16. Framed construction on sandstone footings; peg-tile roof; brick stack. Plan: The house faces west. Small 3-bay 2-cell house with an outshut at the south end. The 2 rooms are heated by back-to-back fireplaces in an axial stack, the outshut has been absorbed into the house as a third room. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front, the framing survives to the footings with tension braces above the middle rail to the right (north). Roof half-hipped at ends with a lean-to roof over the left end outshut. Stack with staggered shafts and corbelled brick cornice, the front shaft with a recessed panel. C19 plank front door to the lobby entrance with a late C20 gabled porch hood. Various C20 casement windows of different sizes, 3 to the ground floor, 2 to the first floor. The rear elevation has a large glazed fixed window to the ground floor and various Cl9 and C20 casements and sashes. Interior: Exposed waney joists on the long axis to the larger (southern) heated room. The north room has a rough crossbeam and exposed joists. Open fireplaces with brick jambs to both rooms. C20 stair rises against the rear wall adjacent to the stack. Jowled wall posts to the framing. Roof: Staggered butt purlin roof with some evidence of blackening to the timbers round the stack.
