TQ 55 41 SPELDHURST SPELDHURST HILL (north side), SPELDHURST 12/555 Group of 4 chest tombs approx 12m north of the tower of the Church of St Mary the Virgin GV II Group of 4 chest tombs. Dated between 1830-1853. The largest is the white marble monument in memory of John Scott (died 1842) it takes the form of a sarcophagus on a 2-step plinth. Sides have large panels with moulded frames, the end ones are circular. Inscription on the south side in Roman serif capitals records the death of John Scott in 1842. Close by the chest tomb of Sir Robert Shore Milne (died 1830) it is white marble. It is rectangular in plan. Its flat lid has moulded edges. Chamfered plinth. Corners have plain clasping pilasters and plain panelled sides. South side is inscribed in Roman serif capitals and records the death of Sir Robert Shore Milne in 1830. Another rather similar chest tomb a little nearer the church. The panel on the northern side is inscribed in Roman serif capitals and records the death of William Mansfield Mons in 1850 and his wife Elizabeth in 1833. The fourth is a sandstone chest tomb in Gothic style in memory of Marianne Tiche in 1853. Ridged lid with moulded edges and chamfered plinth. Corner pilasters have Gothic panels and sides have panels with concave corners. The south side panel is inscribed in Roman serif capitals and records the death of Marianne Tiche in 1853.
