TQ 55 41 SPELDHURST SPELDHURST HILL (north side), SPELDHURST 12/546 War Memorial approx 12m south of the porch of the Church of St Mary the Virgin GV II
War memorial. Circa 1919. According to the church guide it was designed by the son of J. Oldrid Scott, architect of the church. Sandstone with bronze plaques. Tall cross. A slender and slightly tapering shaft has chamfered corners enriched with 4-leaf motifs. Moulded cap with cross above with small fleur-de-lys in the angles. Base of shaft has small gabled buttresses. Shaft stands on an octagonal pedestal with a chamfered top carved with a prayer. Corners have Gothic panels carved with sacred symbols and main sides have brass plaques. The east one honours the dead of the First World War and the other 3 list the dead of the parish with their rank and regiment. It stands on a 3-step plinth.
