Description

TQ 64 SE PADDOCK WOOD MAIDSTONE ROAD 6/336 Oasthouse immediately south west of Mascalls Pound GV II Oasthouse. Possibly late C18, with an additional kiln that includes a brick dated 1827. C20 garage addition. The stowage is framed construction, clad in weatherboarding, on brick footings. Brick kilns; peg-tile roofs to stowage and kilns. Plan: The oathouse is aligned west east, the stowage at the west end has outshuts at the west end and along the south side. Circular brick kiln adjoins at the north east with a later, square kiln (brick dated 1827) at the south east with a gabled projection at the junction with the stowage. Loft steps on the south side below the projection and sheltered by its gabled roof. Exterior: Small lofted stowage. The round kiln has a conical roof with brick cogging below the eaves. The square kiln has a pyramidal roof with brick toothing below the eaves. Both kilns preserve their original cowls. Stowage roof half-hipped at west end. The south elevation of the stowage is 2 windows, both the brick footings of the outshut, the windows with top-hung shutters. Door into the outshut to the right (east). Timber ladder between stowage and the square kiln, to the right. The square kiln has a probably late C19 panelled door on the south side with big strap hinges and original lock box, pent roof over door. The north elevation of the kiln has a C20 garage addition and a C20 opening into the kiln with an iron girder as the lintel. The north elevation of the stowage has 2 first floor 5-light unglazed mullioned windows with slender mullions and one unglazed ground floor window. C19 door on north side into west end outshut. Interior: The stowage has wall posts with formed jowls and a clasped purlin roof, the collars mortised into the principal rafters; no ridge board. The stowage preserves the hop press intact. The purlins and main tie are stamped with large numbers. Listing NGR: TQ6689043757
