Description

TQ 64 NE CAPEL MAIDSTONE ROAD, WHETSTEAD 2/268 Ploggs Hall Barn, East and West GV II Large barn, now converted to 2 houses. C18 or early C19, converted circa 1980. Timber-framed and clad with weatherboards. Brick footings, reset at the back. Peg-tile roof. Plan: Originally a large double barn facing south south east, say south. Long building with 2 sets of opposing double doorways onto the 2 threshing floors. Both front doorways have full height porches and their fronts recessed behind the low front walls of integral outshots (missing on the right (east) end). Now a garage into the front at the right end and each porch is the main entrance to one of the 2 houses built inside the barn. Both houses are 2 storeys and open to the roof in their entrance halls. Exterior: Both porches have recessed front doorways and C20 glass doors in glazed screens which are as large as the former double doors. Windows in new openings around the house are casements with no glazing bars. Disused double doors to rear. Tall roof is half-hipped both ends and carried down continuously over the former outshots. Porches have hipped roofs. Interior: Little of the framed outer walls are exposed. However the builder claims to have left most of the structural carpentry except for parts in the back wall. Roof structure exposed in the entrance halls, collared tie-beam trusses with clasped side purlins and queen struts. This converted barn forms part of a group with the farmhouse (q.v.) and former oasthouse (q.v.). Listing NGR: TQ6570446033
