TQ 55 41 SPELDHURST SPELDHURST HILL (north side), SPELDHURST 12/550 Johnstone chest tomb approx 3m south of the chancel of the Church of St Mary the Virgin GV II
Chest tomb. Dated 1776 in memory of the Reverend William Johnstone. Sandstone. Chest tomb is retangular in plan with a thick soffit-chamfered flat lid. Any plinth is now buried. Sides have fielded panels, 3 on the long sides and one each end. Inscriptions in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering with some italics. It is a touching memorial. The lid records the death of William Johnstone in 1776 and the east end panel records the sad deaths of 6 of his children in the same year. A John Archer and Hester Clutterbuck are also recorded but the dates of their deaths are illegible.
