Description
TQ 55 41 SPELDHURST SPELDHURST HILL (north side), SPELDHURST 12/558 Group of 3 chest tombs approx 6m north of the vestry of the Church of St Mary the Virgin GV II
Group of 3 chest tombs. Late C18. All are white marble. All are rectangular in plan with flat lids with moulded edges and have moulded plinth. The plainest has inset corner pilasters with moulded caps and bases and fielded panels on each side. The inscription on the lid is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering but is so faint as to be illegible in all but perfect lighting conditions. The other two have moulded baluster corners. One has fielded panels each side and the south side panel is inscribed in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering with some italics and records the death of Thomas Baker in 1767. Other relatives are recorded on the other sides. The third chest tomb has panels with concave corners and the inscription on the lid in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering records the death of George Skinner in 1771. Lid also has a carved armorial bearing in a roundel.
