TQ 7468 SW ROCHESTER THE PRECINCT 9/190 Kings School (formerly The Deanery) 24.10.50 and Cathedral visitors' Centre GV I
ROCHESTER THE PRECINCT TQ 7468 SW 9/190 King's School (formerly The Deanery) and Cathedral Visitors' Centre 24.10.50 GV Former Deanery, now part of the Kings's School. Late-medieval priory and early C16 work incorporated in a building dating mainly from 1640 and 1770. Random and coursed ragstone and clunch rubble; Kent tile and Welsh slate roofs. Given limited access and much late-C20 internal re-ordering, the plan and development of this building, together with its significance, are difficult to determine at present. Front: 3 storeys; symmetrical late-C18 2:3:2: bay house with centre bays projecting under brick pediment; renewed brick parapet with cornice band and stone coping. 12-pane hornless sash windows with red brick dressings throughout. At rear, the E wall of the (now ruined) Chapter House is incorporated into 3 parallel wings under hipped roofs, with a large central stack. To the S of the Chapter House (on the side of the monastic dorter), a brick and ragstone service wing shows evidence of C16 rectangular brick dressed window openings. Mid-C19 brick entrance porch at NE angle. Note that the C20 brick extension to the S is of no special interest. Interior: access to main staircase not available. One ground- floor room with late C18 fire surround. 1st floor has 2 large C16 chambers with C17 and C18 details; 3 central bays of 1st floor has stile and muntin panelling with C18 marble fire surround, pilastered overmantel in 'artisan mannerist' style (but possibly a C19 replica). 2-bay room to S, has 4-centred moulded brick fireplace, probably early C16. Early to mid C17 panelling (presumably c.1640), with 2 fielded and raised panels, deep, coved cornice, pilasters and plinths with 2 strap work panels at base and primitive Doric capitals. This was previously listed as The Deanery.
