Description

ROCHESTER ROCHESTER BRIDGE TQ 7468 NW and TQ 7368 NE 7/207, 8/207 Rochester Bridge GV II Roadbridge across the River Medway (now forming the north-west bound carriageway). 1914. It replaced Cubitt's 1857 bridge which itself replaced the late C14 bridge that was sited a little upstream, close to the Bridge Chapel (qv). Major ornamental features, piers and cutwaters of granite, rusticated below road level with quoining; the carriageway and supporting superstructure of cast-iron or steel girders. N and S approaches with plinths supporting cast lions couchant, and 4-way flat arches supporting entablature and attic, flanking the highway, linked by balustrades. 3 spans, over-arched with supporting and cross-tie girders. Cast-iron railings to footpaths. At the junction of the spans, tall fluted columns on granite plinths supporting heraldic devices. Panels displaying the Rochester Bridge Trust's heraldic archievements appear in various positions, especially the arches at the approaches.
