Description
The following building shall be added
TR 03 NE BONNINGTON Thatched Cottage 4/179 II Cottage. Probably C18 with late Cl9 and C20 extensions. Painted Flemish bond brick and weatheboarded end gables. Straw thatch half-hipped roof. Brick axial stack to right of centre with later brick shaft. Plan: The original 2-room-plan cottage has a central axial stack with a large fireplace (and oven) heating the larger left hand room. The smaller right hand room was originally unheated but now has a C20 range connected to the back of the axial stack and a staircase also against the stack. There is a doorway at the front giving direct access into the left hand room but this might not be the original entry. In circa late C19 a small outhut was built at the right hand end. The house was further extended in the C20 with single storey additions at the entrance right hand end and behind the left end of the original range. Exterior: 1 storey and attic. Asymmetrical 2-window front. 2 small windows, to the right a single light C20 casement with glazing bars, and to the left of centre a Cl9 2-light casement without glazing bars. At the left end of the front a circa late C19 or early C20 plank door. 2 symmetrically placed dormers in the thatch at the front with C20 2-light casements with glazing bars. To the right the C20 single storey brick extension with a hipped plain tile roof linked to the original cottage by a circa late Cl9 lean-to. The rear elevation has a Cl9 3-light casement and to the left the C20 flat-roof extension. In the left hand end wall a C20 3-light casement onboth floors. Interior: The main left hand room has what appears to be an unchamfered or thinly chamfered cross beam and roughly dressed exposed rafters. The large fireplace with an oven in the brick axial stack has a thinly chamfered timber lintel. The small right hand room has exposed rafters and a C20 range (Aga) against the back of the axial stack. The first floor and roof space were not inspected.
