Description

1. 5272 SMARDEN THE STREET Vesperhawk House (formerly listed as Vestpherhawk Farmhouse TQ 84 SE 13/27 14.2.67. II 2. Circa 1490. T-shaped timber-framed building. The north front and the ground floor of the west front are close-studded with plaster infilling. The south front has been refaced, the ground floor with stucco and weatherboarding, above with tiles. The first floor of the north and east fronts oversails on the protruding ends of the floor joists and brackets, but the ground floor of the south front has been underbuilt. Hipped tiled roof with sprocket eves cornice. Five casement windows. The west front has unusual windows with 4-centred heads and the trace of a groove for the shutter, and a 4 centred wooden doorway with spandrels containing a double petalled rose, indicating York and Lancaster 'composed' and the dragon of Cadwallader, the emblem of Henry VII's mother's family.
