Description

ROCHESTER HIGH STREET TQ 7468 NW 7/53 Nos 34 and 36 23.8.74 GV II House, now shops with living accommodation above. Mid C18 re- modelling of an earlier house. red brick with some early fine pointing. 3½ storeys; symmetrical 5 window range. C20 shop front set into a c.1900 surround with panelled pilasters, moulded cornice and open ironwork brattishing. 12-pane sash windows to 1st and 2nd floors (hornless to 2nd); 6-pane sashes to upper half storey. Sills and painted window arches throughout. Central opening to each floor blocked. Parapet. Interior: c.1700 stair with turned newels and balusters survives between 1st and 3rd floor. One completely panelled room: 2 tiers of large panels with moulded stiles and muntins. Some panelling to present hall and corridors. 2 c.1900 fireplaces with tiled surrounds on 1st floor. Below ground level are the remains of an early C14 valuted undercroft; the valut itself has collapsed (remains of chamfered ribs survive, some embedded in later walling) but the shaft and capitals are in situ: simple roll moulding to capitals and bases with springers for quadrapartite vault.
