ROCHESTER HIGH STREET TQ 7468 (EASTGATE) 10/87 Nos 186 and 188 (Berkeley House 24.10.50 GV II* Formerly a house, now offices, a bank and restaurant. Early C19 with later alterations. Stuccoed brick; Welsh slate hipped roofs. Double depth plan house set back only a little from the street with lower service wings projecting to street level left and right. End stacks. 2 storeys. Front: symmetrical, 3 bays. Moulded cornice, 1st floor sill band, ground-floor lintel band (which returns as lintel band along inner elevations of service wings) and plinth. Horned 4-pane sashes in reveals under flat window arches to 1st floor. Tripartite sash windows (4:12:4) under flat arches recessed under segmental arches to ground and flanking a good open proch with Corninthian columns and pilasters and pedimented entablature, approached from each side by curved steps with railings. Side walls of service wings with 1st floor sash window and round-headed doorway below (blocked to bank, ie left) all recessed under segmental arch. Front elevation of wings are now different. To right the lintel band returns to take in another segmental arched recess with 1st floor sash and late C20 glazed shop front; to left the band returns to form a moulded cap to end pilaster. 2 segmental arched 1st floor sash windows; late C20 shop window (with glazing bars), pilasters, panelled plinth, and door to right under rectangular overlight. Interior: curved open well stair (centre, rear) with stick balusters and moulded stair ends in a curved turret under glazed dome. Some panelled reveals. Inner porch door with some Art Nouveau glazing. Note: the York flagged forecourt is included in this listing; the front railings were reinstated in 1986. Listing NGR: TQ7453768194
