Description
1. 5272 GREAT CHART BUCKSFORD LANE Singleton Manor TQ 9841 25/26 17.9.52 II* 2. C16 or earlier timber-framed building with tiled roof. The north-west, or entrance front, has plaster infilling on the first floor but its ground floor has been rebuilt in red brick. The end window bays project with hips over and probably their first floors once overhung on bressummers, but these have been underbuilt in brick. Crow-stepped brick chimney breast. The window between this and the south-westernmost window bay is a window of 3 tiers of 5 lights with wooden millions and transoms. Small 2 storeyed gabled projection towards the north-east end, containing a porch on the ground floor with an archway having an obtusely-pointed head and carved spandrels, and the first floor oversailing above a cove and having a small oriel window with cover beneath it. Two windows of 5 lights between the porch and the chimney breast. Six casement windows, some of them with early C19 Gothic glazing. Two storeys and attics. One gabled dormer. The south-east, or garden front, is half H-shaped. The north-east arm of the half-H has the first floor of its south-west face oversailing but is faced with stone rubble, with a narrow tile-hung gable above and a pentice to the north-east. The south-west arm of the half-H is tile-hung with a hip over and was probably added. The house retains its moat complete. Interior has late C16 plaster ceiling. Six carved relief heads over fireplace similar to Godinton and Court Lodge.
