Description

1. 5272 CHARING MARKET PLACE Barn to south-east of Palace Farmhouse (formerly listed as Barn of Palace Farm) TQ 9549 22/5 14.2.67 I 2. C14. The barn comprises the east side of the courtyard including the Great Hall of the former manor house of the Archbishops of Canterbury. Probably built by John Stratford Archbishop from 1333-1348,and whose favourite residence is said to have been Charing. Two parallel ranges and an 'L' projection to the south-west. Stone rubble and flints with long and short ashar quoins. Hipped tiled roof with pentice to the south. Waggon entrance in the centre of the east and west fronts. The south-west projection has a pointed stone archway and a stone window over it consisting of a single light with a 4-centred head. Listing NGR: TQ9543649426
