Description

ROCHESTER ST MARGARET'S TQ 7468 SW STREET 9/209 St Margaret's House and building adjacent to North- East. 24-10-50 GV II Former private house, now part of the King's School. Late C18. Brick. Double depth central entrance and stair hall plan with services to rear. 2 and 3 storeys. Street front: asymmetrical 6-window range flanked by lower ranges of different heights. (3 windows to left, 2 to right). Painted brickwork; parapet with cornice band and stone coping; sashes in exposed recessed frames (6, 12 and 16 panes to 2nd 1st and ground floors) all under flat brick arches and with stone sills. Left of centre doorcase with cornice, frieze and pilasters; panelled door with overlight in panelled reveals. The window to the right of the doorway is blocked. Extension of front to left with 3 sashes to 1st floor (2 set in altered openings), another sash with a blocked window to ground; extension to right with 3 partially blocked windows to ground, and 2 sashes to 1st floor. Both extensions with coped parapet and cornice band. To the left of St Margaret's House, and connected to it by a round-headed arched doorway, is the rear wall of the adjacent building with 3 large raised panels, parapet, cornice band and plinth, all in exposed brick. Garden front: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 4-window range. 9-pane hornless sashes to upper floor, 18-pane to ground with external shutters. Shallow central ground-floor pediment with acroterions and wreaths. Overhanging eaves and moulded eaves cornice. Hipped slate roof. Listing NGR: TQ7412368275
