House, divided into 2, now one. Middle and right-hand bays late C15 (said to be 1470), left-and bay slightly later, C18 rear outshut, and mid C20 rear single-storey extensions. MATERIALS: timber-framed with weatherboarded ground-floor and rendered right-hand end, brick axial stack behind the ridge, and tiled hipped roof. PLAN: open hall plan remodelled in late C16/early C17 with inserted hall floor and stack. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, attic and cellar; 4-window range. Continuous first floor jetty with curved brackets, central and left-hand C20 doors, right-hand 8/8-pane sash in flush frame and left of centre French window; framed first floor has exposed posts, 2 curved tension braces to the left-hand end bays, 4 regularly-spaced early C19 paired pointed-arched windows with metal 6-pane casements with glazed tympana. 3 former clerestory windows beneath the eaves with thin mullion bars, now blocked. Right-hand return has a single casement. INTERIOR: contains a timber frame with jowl posts on the second floor, right-hand solar with rear tension brace, an inserted stack in a former smoke bay between middle and right-hand bays with a rear window with diamond mullions and shutter groove possibly for control of the smoke. An asymmetrical lateral beam set toward the front to a possibly lobby, and a former rear central stair bay now included in the outshut; left-hand bay a separate construction. Cupboards with HL hinges, and one first-floor cupboard in the back of the smoke bay with cock's comb hinges. Roof not inspected but reported to have crown post trusses, closed to the third bay from W, but open above the collar, and smoke-blackened. (RCHME: Survey of Kent Houses: 40526).
