GILLINGHAM TQ76NE GRANGE ROAD, Grange 686-1/7/68 (South side) 06/11/90 Grench Manor II House, extended, now retirement home. Mid-late C17, extended to left and rear late C19. Flemish bond brick with a tiled cross-gabled roof and ridge and gable stacks. PLAN: single-depth with late C19 left-hand cross range and rear C19 extensions. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic; 6-window range. Originally a symmetrical 5-window front with outer windows closer, right-hand 1-window range added, marked by a straight joint, with a modillion eaves cornice. Late C19 ashlar porch with stilted segmental-arched doorways to front and sides on pilasters, 6-panel door and small lancets in the sides. Rubbed brick flat arches to 2/2-pane horned sashes in flush frames, and 3 hipped dormers with 3/3-pane sashes. Left-hand projecting gable has plat bands, a full-height canted bay with keyed cambered casements, and overhanging timber-framed attic gable on carved brackets. Right-hand late C19 end has raised ends to the coped gable, and segmental-arched casements; behind is a mid C20 single-storey extension with parapet. 2 parallel rear ranges with varied fenestration including a large first-floor E 10/10-pane sash in exposed frame. INTERIOR: altered late C19 and mid C20, a large entrance hall has a rear marble fire surround with an eared architrave and shell moulding, and late C19 stair, right-hand room has C19 panelling, fire surround and late C18 6-panel door. First floor has an early C19 marble fireplace with pilasters and paterae and a C19 plain pilastered fireplace. Late C19 wing has Adam-style fireplace with swag and central panel with urn.
