Description

TR 25 NW WINGHAM ADISHAM ROAD (east side) 4/271 Wingham Waterworks II Waterworks. Built 1903-5 for Margate Corporation. Red brick and slate roof, with rendered and stone dressings. Free Baroque and Art Nouveau style. Main block: large single storey machine hall with plinth, stringcourses, cornice and parapet with central ball finial. Central projectiom with segmental pediment and vase finial. Two large mullioned and transomed windows with gauged and keyed elliptical heads, and central double half glazed doors in keyed and moulded semi-circular surround, with lunette over and between them a scrolled pediment inscribed Margate Water Works. Single storey block to left with 2 segmentally headed and keyed wooden casements. Secondary block: to right of centre, with keyed and scrolled lunette over large cart doors, with either side a T-shaped window with segmental flying cornices. Similar single storey wing at end right to that at end left. The whole has fine quality brick and stonework and detailing, and all the fenestration exhibits Art Nouveau stained or painted glass, mostly abstract, but with landscapes in main block.Machinery removed, now containing electrical pumps.
