9/60 Elham Manor (formerly listed 29.12.66 under Cullen's Hill, as The Manor House)

House. Early C16 orearlier, with late C18 alterations. Timber- framed with rendered infilling. First floor of left hall bay and left gable end clad with darkened weatherboarding. First floor of left side and rear gable end of wing clad with broad bands of plain and fishscale tiles. Plain tile roof. Wealden, of which short left hall bay, two,storeyed,left end bays and rear left return wing survive. Built on a corner site. 2 storeys and cellar. Plinth or cellar wall to left side, of irregular blocks of galleted ragstone and sandstone on a base of roughly-coursed flints, increasing in depth with slope of land to rear. Blocked rectangular cellar light. Continuous jetty with moulded fascia board and moulded solid-spandrel brackets to two storeyed left end bays, returning along left side and again round rear gable end of wing on moulded dragon posts. Close-studding to ground floor of front elevation and left return. Broadly-spaced studding with tension braces to first floor of front elevation and ground floor of rear gable end. Weatherboarded coving under flying wall-plate. Steeply-pitched roof hipped to left. Rear section of left return has slightly lower eaves and ridge, roof hipped to rear. Red brick stack to rear of left end bay at junction with wing, with ovolo-moulded cornice and four flues. Red brick ridge stack to left end of left hall bay. Irregular fenestration of 2 windows; none to left hall bay, one three-light leaded casement to first left storeyed bay, and canted oriel through- dormer, on single, scrolled strapwork bracket, with pedimented plain-tiled gable and two-light casement and side-lights, to storeyed left end bay. Canted bay window with painted brick base and two-light leaded window to each storeyed end bay. Left return elevation unpierced save for three small two-light leaded casements; one to first floor and two to ground floor. Broad ribbed and studded door occupying most of ground floor of left hall bay, with moulded and enriched C17 cornice. Half-glazed door with two fielded panels and moulded and finely-dentilled wooden cornice to rear gable end of wing. Further two-storey weatherboarded rear wing towards centre, abutting right side of left wing and with hipped plain tile roof. Interior not inspected.
