Description
ROCHESTER HIGH STREET TQ 7468 NW 7/41 Royal Crown Hotel GV II Public House (unoccupied at time of re-survey, 1988). 1859-61. Yellow brick with flush pointing; clay tile roof. The building occupies a corner site: 10 window range overall (including 3 to Esplanade), the 3 corner bays durved. 2 storeys and attic; string course, and dentilled eaves. All windows with segmental arches and stone cills on brackets; 9 prominent dormers. 4-pane horned sash windows throughout. One window bay to High Street with windows blocked to both floors to allow for chimney flues. Corner entrance with elaborate surround (panelled pilasters and reveals, panel above with swags, moulded cornice, all in stone); half-glazed double doors with overlight. The 1st floor windows on the curved elevation have simple cill railings. 2 large axial stacks, and a prominent lateral stack to High Street (above the blocked bays), of 2 stages; all stacks with corbelled caps. Cast-iron rainwater goods. End elevation to Gandulph Square is almost symmetrical, 5 window range, the gable wall treated as a pediment with a dentilled string course between 1st floor and the 3 attic windows. Apex roof ventilator shaped as an acorn and oak leaves. 1st floor doorway to left-hand side approached by ornamental cast-iron stairs; ground-floor with central doorway with stone architrave and half-glazed double doors under rectangular overlight; another door to right, panelled with overlight. Windows throughout exactly as to the other elevations. Railings to cellar windows. The spear-headed railings to the Esplanade elevation are continuous with those to No 1 Esplanade, and are included in this listing. The Royal Crown Hotel occupies a prominent position at the end of Rochester Bridge.
