                            1. 5281                                          CHURCH STREET                                               (South Side)                                               FOLKESTONE                                               Stone Cross in Churchyard                                               of the Parish Church of                                               St Mary and St Eanswythe TR 2235 NE 1/5B II 2. The cross is dated 1897 and is an octagonal pillar with moulded base surmounted by a carved panel depicting the Crucifixion capped by a cross.  The cross stands on 4 stone steps which are Mediaeval.  According to a charter of Edward III the burgesses of Folkestone met annually at the Churchyard cross on the feast of the Nativity of Our lady (8th September) to elect the Mayor.
