Description
Constructed after 1868, the smallest of the 'Chatham Ring' forts. Irregular pentagon in plan. Narrow deep ditch, flint revetted. Barracks and magazines arranged across the interior under. All the brick is cement rendered except for two moulded courses. No detail such as iron work left, otherwise in faircondition. Owned by Kent CC who plan to open it to the public. The fort is now almost entirley overgrown by trees and bushes, having remained unoccupied since WW2and being relativly accessible. It is now much vandalised. The effect of the natural growth is nost serious in the case of the ditch. Ditch is c7m deep and 6.5m at its widest, tapering to c. 5m at its bottom; it is revetted with concrete. Woody growths are well established in the bottom but the ditch's walls have resisted remarkably well the encroachment of tree roots and are for long stretches reasonably intact. The casements are the principal structures within the ifrt and being of concrete construction have so far been little affected by the dense tree growth above.
