Description

The following building:- ABBEY STREET TR 0161 NE (east side) 1/90 No 84 GV 29.7.50 II shall be upgraded to Grade II* (star) and the description shall read:- House. Late C16 timberframed house of c1589 refronted in early C19. Front forms part of terrace with nos 82 and 83. 2 storeys and attics painted mathematical tiles. Tiled roof with brick chimney stack. Parapet with stone copings. Tripartite sash to 1st floor. Ground floor has restored bow window matching those to nos 82 and 83. Left side doorcase has blocked round-headed fanlight, impost blocks and panelled door. Rear elevation has exposed timber frame with close studding, the attic gable over sailing on curved brackets. 2 side windows on each floor have original triple mullioned windows. Central windows are tripartite sashes to lower floors and casement to attic storey. Very fine late C16 interior includes room with oak panelling with strapwork frieze and overmantel with pilasters and arches and cupboard with cocks head hinges. Fine well staircase with moulded handrail and chamfered newel posts with knops. Dining room has early C19 wooden fire surround with reeding and paterae and cast iron basket grate and late C16 panelling with frieze of mutules. Drawing room has oak panelling with mutule frieze and pilasters and overmantel with pilasters, terms and strapwork motifs. Stopped doorcases with panelled doors and 3 plank doors with iron hinges. Ground floor passageway has chamfered beams and decorative brackets. The following entry:- ABBEY STREET TR 0161 NE (east side) 1/90 Nos 82 - 84 (consec) GV 29.7.50 II shall be amended to read:- TR 0161 NE ABBEY STREET (east side) 1/90 Nos 82 and 83 GV 29.7.50 II Pair of terraced houses, no 84 having a similar frontage. C18 fronts with reused late C16 features to doorcase of no 83 and possible C16 timber-framed core. Red brick in flemish bond with tiled roof and central brick chimneystack. Two storeys and attics; 4 windows. Flat-roofed dormers. Parapet and dentilled eaves cornice. First floor has tripartite 24-pane sashes. Ground floor has curved bays with 24 panes. No 82 has doorcase with semi-circular fanlight, impost blocks and 6-panelled door. No 83 has an elaborate doorcase with engaged clustered columns, open pediment supported on reused late C16 "grotesque" brackets and date 1598 and initials HS, rectangular fanlight and c1820 door with 5 moulded panels. ABBEY STREET 1. 1103 (East Side) Nos 82 to 84 ( consec) TR 0161 NE 1/90 29.7.50. II GV 2. Barge of Cl6-C17 houses with C18 fronts. 2 storeys and attic. 5 windows and 2 dormers in all. Painted brick. Dentilled cornice and parapet. Tiled roofs. Glazing bars intact. 4 curved windows on ground floor with cornices over and 1 small canted bay. Nos 82 and 84 have round-headed doorways with 6-panel doors, No 82 a semi-circular fanlight and No 84 a similar tympanum. No 83 has a more elaborate doorway with engaged clustered columns, pediment supported on carved bracket with the date 1598 in the tympanum, rectangular fanlight and door of 5 moulded panels.
