RAMSGATE HARBOUR PARADE TR 3864 NW (north side) 13/147 26.10.78 No. 68 (The Castle Hotel) GV II Public House, now Art Trust. Late C18, extended c.1805. Painted brick with slate roof. Four storeys and basement with painted quoins to ground floor and 1st floor, and parapet to roof with stacks to left, to right and to end right. The original building with regular fenestration of 3 segmentally sashes on 3rd floor, 3 segmentally headed glazing bar sashes on 2nd floor; 3 canted bays with French windows on 1st floor with tented verandah with trellised piers and wrought rails. Two canted bays to ground floor with pilasters and sashes, with basement openings below. Central double panelled door with semi-circular fanlight in moulded surround. Large plastered doorcase with heavily enriched and guilloched pilasters and huge brackets with relief of castles supporting cornice. Additional wing to right with segmentally headed glazing bar sash to each floor, with segmental plate glass ground floor. Interior: late C19 staircase; Assembly rooms on 2nd floor. The main block and adjacent wing were both owned C18 and C19 by Tomson and Wootton, but run separately as the Castle Hotel ("lately rebuilt" in 1814) and the Castle Tap, not originally interconnected.
